"Sun Moon Dome," created and installed by blacksmith sculptor Adam Leventhal in 1989
As Jerry and I were walking to Nickel Diner, on the (s.e.) corner of 5th and Main, I noticed this magnificent weathervane on the rooftop of one of the oldest buildings in downtown LA. The Pershing hotel is part of the "Charnock Block", built in 1888 as a hotel with retail space on the ground floor. Notice the detail in the windows; the round bay corner window and rows of arched oriel bay windows alternating with sash windows. It's now used as supportive housing for the homeless by the Skid Row Housing Trust. Adam Leventhal worked for the Trust and created the weathervane to put on the roof "because there was nothing up there." Unfortunately, Adam has since passed on (1958-2000) but a memorial/museum has been set up to honor him: http://adamsforge.com/ (Sept 25, 2011)
