n the heart of Uggiano is the town square, Piazza Umberto I. I stood in the center and could see everything, La Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria Maddalena...Patron Saint of the country and the Angel Tower , which overlooks the square, away from the corner of Saint Lucia and Casamassella . The Angel Tower is all that remains of the original outpost lookout from which originates the name of Uggiano and in 1939 was declared a historical - cultural . La Chiesa matrice di Santa Maria Maddalena has a basilica with three naves, a Latin cross, with drum and dome. The facade was finished in 1775 , but continued repair throughout the nineteenth century. Around this tower was born a village. Following the Aragonese, in the period of their domination in the Terra d' Otranto Otranto donated to the church of the village and all'arcivesoco the title of " Baron Oggiani ." Symbolic references to these events can be found in iconographic traits still present in the emblem of the country (see the coat of arms ) . From Viggiano was the name of Uggiano , to which is added "La Chiesa", The Church.
