Around this tower was born a village. Following the Aragonese, in the period of their domination in the Terra d' Otranto Otranto donated to the church of the village and all'arcivesoco the title of " Baron Oggiani ." Symbolic references to these events can be found in iconographic traits still present in the emblem of the country (see the coat of arms ) . From Viggiano was the name of Uggiano , to which is added "La Chiesa", The Church.
